A middle-aged artist raised a large synthetic brush above his head as if he was a conductor holding his baton, and closed his eyes. It was an original ritual – cleansing of mind from unnecessary thoughts as there was a long way of creation based on spontaneity awaiting the craftsman.
On March 10, 2013 the exhibition hall of Sevstar FM radio studio decorated with paintings made in neo-expressionism, visionary art and outsider art styles became a workroom for the remarkable guest from America.
What was the artist named Jake Bell thinking about during the short meditation? Did he recollect his own Lakeville in Connecticut, how he preferred a rock band to college when he was 18? Or how in the 60-ies he was among the pioneers of psychedelic revolution in rock music being a guitarist in “The Random Concept” band and how he was called the white Jimmy Hendricks? Did he travel through his memory to the 80-ies when he mastered scrimshaw and then worked in «Alaskan Silver & Ivory Company» and became one of the five best carvers of the USA? Or maybe he remembered the time when oil painting and electronic music came into his life.
The artist opened his eyes – the time has come. A stretched canvas, bottles of water, acrylic paints and pastel were the instruments of the Sunday concert. The music started playing, it was ambient, the genre in which Jake Bell worked as a CJ. He always believed that this music as well as new age is the product of the fifth dimension of space. Jake was developing those styles at the very beginning of their formation. For his CD «SYNJASE: Return of the Vortex» (2001) Mr. Bell was even called “Vangelis for the next generation”. He has collected material for four CDs.
The talented maestro has many projects – individual and group master classes of spontaneous meditative painting including fluorescent art, participation in music, psychology and spiritual practice festivals among which are “Misterika”, “Tavale” and “Fairy Town” (Ukraine).
Jake has been living in Sevastopol for a year and a half being fond of our city. In the artist’s opinion the psychedelic revolution in rock music of the 60-ies in the USA was the first wave of spiritual renovation and now the second wave is coming and it is going to wash the Sevastopol coast. A producer, companion and friend of Jake’s a Sevastopolite Evgeny Oborin helps him to organize events and to communicate with Russian-speaking visitors. This exhibition was arranged together with a DJ of Sevstar FM Rem Faustov.
The guests of the gallery watched a magic dance near the canvas with great interest. Before their eyes a new picture of the neo-expressionist was being created – an image of a man and a woman holding the World and a DNA chain ascending into space. By the end of the master class some people bought several works of Jake Bell.
Jake Bell is a many-sided personality who continues to serve the cause of contemporary art. And I am glad that our city has become a heart of his inspiration.
